Other forms of crown lengthening are performed to help improve periodontal health, or to maintain their natural dentition in preparation of restorative or cosmetic procedures including crowns and veneers. This could be due to decay or fracture below the gum line, so crown lengthening is done to expose more tooth structure for placement of the crown and recontour the bone to receive the new crown in a more favourable environment. Crowns that are placed too deep or close to the bone, will cause further damage or destruction to the gum tissue and bone if placed without crown lengthening first.
